Fantasy has always been bigger than one road.

For me, that road started early.

It started with stories that opened the world wider than the one outside my window. Tolkien, Piers Anthony, Dungeons & Dragons, swords, knights, dragons, monsters, magic, strange creatures, hidden dangers, and the idea that somewhere beyond the ordinary world there might be another path waiting.

That was the pull.

Fantasy offered escape, but not in a shallow way. It was not only about running away from real life. It was about stepping into a place where the impossible could be faced with a blade, a spell, a companion, or a choice made at the edge of danger.

Why Fantasy Creates Distance Without Losing Meaning

As I got older, I found that some fiction set too close to real life could hit in the wrong places. Stories grounded too heavily in ordinary pain, ordinary struggle, and ordinary human cruelty can land hard, especially for readers who feel things deeply. Fantasy gave me room to breathe. It created distance without removing meaning.

A dragon is not real, but fear is.

A cursed kingdom is not real, but grief is.

A dark road through unknown country is not real, but uncertainty is.

That is one of the reasons fantasy works. It lets us approach real emotions through symbols, monsters, magic, quests, and worlds that are far enough away to explore safely.

The Roads I Return to Most Often

My own tastes have usually leaned toward epic fantasy, sword and sorcery, mythic adventure, and stories with that old Dungeons & Dragons feeling: dangerous roads, strange companions, lost places, magical threats, and the sense that the world is larger and older than the characters fully understand.

I like the adventure.

I like the unknown.

I like the idea of stepping through the wrong doorway and realizing the map has changed.

There Is Room for Different Kinds of Fantasy

That does not mean every fantasy road has to look the same. Some readers want sprawling kingdoms and ancient wars. Some want dark magic and monsters. Some want lighter adventure. Some want paranormal stories, shifters, magical bloodlines, or fantasy romance. Some readers are drawn to the emotional bond between characters as much as the danger surrounding them.

There is room for those roads too.

But my own interest has always been strongest when the romance, if it appears, supports the story rather than replacing it. Traveling companions may fall for each other. Loyalty may deepen into love. A bond may raise the stakes. That can work very well when it grows naturally out of the adventure.

What I am less drawn to is fantasy where the adventure becomes secondary and the story is mainly a romance novel wearing a cloak.

That is not an insult to readers who love those books. It is just a matter of taste. Every reader has shelves they return to and shelves they walk past.

Because this site is meant to serve fantasy readers broadly, not every book, promo, or feature mentioned here will match my personal reading preferences exactly. Some stories may lean more paranormal, romantic, shifter-focused, or genre-blended than I would normally choose for myself. If they sound like they may interest readers looking for those paths, they may still be worth pointing out.

But the center of this blog will remain clear.

Adventure.

Magic.

Old worlds.

Strange roads.

Dangerous choices.

The sense that the ordinary world is not the only one, and that somewhere just beyond the edge of sight, another realm may be waiting.

Fantasy is bigger than one road.

This blog will not pretend otherwise.

But the roads I return to most often are the ones with mystery in the distance, steel at the side, magic in the air, and the unknown waiting just past the next bend.
